Image Split Flap Display Modules

Development, design and construction of about 200 Split Flap Display modules to create various large format image Display matrices for the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. Project developed in collaboration with "Èxit de Disseny".

What is a Split Flap Display?

They are a set of modules with mobile leaves that rotate. Years ago, before digital screens and LED panels existed, they were commonly seen in airports and train stations in alphanumeric form, displaying flight or train information. Each module was a letter or number and was configured to a table or matrix of modules creating a screen according to the alphanumeric text to be displayed.

The rotary movement and sound of the leaves when the information changed has a certain glamour that attracts the eye.

Inspired by these old displays, Exit Design proposes to develop large format Split Flap modules, where each leaf will be an image, thus creating a matrix of a large format display, so that, rotating all the modules to show a final image, creates a visual and sound effect of great impact.

The dimension of each module is 420mm wide and 352mm high and contains 50 images that are combined with those of the other modules that form a giant image display.

“Èxit de Disseny” installed these modules at the Mobile World Congress: several Display matrices (with more than 130 modules) in the entrance hall area, as well as a Split Flap Display with a 10x9 matrix (90 modules) in the outdoor area.
